Underpaid Claims When the Insurer’s Offer Is Too Low

When the check does not cover the repair

An insurer can accept a claim and still pay too little. The usual sign is simple: the contractor’s price is well above the insurer’s number. The gap rarely comes from one big item. It comes from many small ones the first estimate left out or priced too low.

Where the money usually goes missing

  • Items left out: damage inside walls, under flooring or in the attic that a short inspection did not find.
  • Partial repairs: a patch where the material can no longer be matched, so the repair will show.
  • Depreciation: an amount held back for age that may be owed to you once the work is done.
  • Building code: work the code now requires that the estimate ignored.
  • Contents and living costs: belongings, and the cost of living elsewhere during repairs, when your policy covers them.

Ask for the insurer’s estimate

Florida law requires the insurer to send you a copy of its adjuster’s detailed estimate within 7 days of producing it. That document is the starting point. We go through it line by line against our own inspection and estimate.

How we ask for more

A request for additional payment on a claim already reported is called a supplemental claim. Under Florida law it must be made within 18 months of the date of loss. We prepare it with photographs, measurements and pricing, send it to the insurer and negotiate. In most cases, depositing a first payment does not stop you from asking for more, unless you signed a release. Bring us everything you signed and received.

What it costs

We don’t get paid unless you get paid. On a supplemental claim, Florida law allows a public adjuster’s fee only on the additional money obtained after you sign with us.
